Lutrinae

dnaoodb: professional biology database , biology encyclopedia

In biological classification,  Lutrinae, a subfamily of the weasel family. It is a larger member of the mustelidae family that is adapted to aquatic life.

The subfamily Lutrinae is widely distributed and can be found in the waters of Eurasia, Africa and the Americas.

Members of the subfamily Lutrinae are good at swimming, very flexible in the water, and hunt for food in the water. Among them, the sea otter Enhydra lutris spends almost its entire life at sea, rarely lands on land, and moves clumsily on land. Sea otters often lie adrift on the surface of the ocean and are the only marine mammals that regularly swim on their backs.

Sea otters are found along the coast of the North Pacific and are now extremely rare due to being hunted for their valuable fur. The otter subfamily includes the largest member of the mustelidae family. The sea otter is the larger mustelid. The even larger one is the giant otter Pteronura brasiliensis, which lives in the northern waters of South America. It can reach 1.5 meters in length and weigh up to 30 meters. Kilogram. Giant otters are said to even kill large reptiles such as spectacled crocodiles and anacondas.
