Description

greyish dorsum, legs, flanks and chest and rear ears reddish to pale yellowish brown, belly area and cheeks white. The ears are long, triangular and straight, the tail is black in the upper (dorsal) part when it is held horizontally when running. The fox is small; an adult weighs from 1.8 to 3.5 kg.

The coat is moderately long and coarse; the upper parts are gray, formed by an almost equal mixture of black tips and white subterminal stripes of coarse hairs; The undercoat on the back is brown, completely covered with guide hairs. The top of the head is colored similar to the back, but more subtly grayish. On the sides, the black tips of the hairs are less noticeable and the undercoat is pinkish-brown. The back of the ears is dull yellowish brown to hazel in color on the outside and behind the base of the ear; the tip of the ear is covered with a mixture of black hairs, the inside of the ear is whitish. The chin and muzzle are pale brown; the lips and part from the corner of the mouth to the throat are dull white. The upper parts of the fore and hind legs and feet are covered with a mixture of black and brownish-yellow hairs; the inside and undersides of the legs are cinnamon color. The tail is covered on top with mixed brownish and black hairs; the tip of the tail is black; the lateral parts of the tail are brownish-yellow. The chest area and throat are white.

Distribution And Habitat

The subspecies was first described from Savanilla de Pirris, a city on the Pacific coast, near Rio Grande de Pirris, department of San José, Costa Rica; at an altitude of about 500 feet in 1931. Goodwin's initial description was: "A fairly small, dark-colored gray fox, with dark undercoat and a small skull, small teeth and a relatively long palate.

Habitats vary: dry, wet and gallery forests, agricultural areas and coffee plantations.

Ecology
