dnaoodb: professional biology database , biology encyclopedia

in biology, Liriope Graminifolia (Latin:Liriope graminifolia (L.) Baker ) Is Asparagaceae, Liriope. an evergreen perennial stemless plant growing to a height of 0.3 meters. Tubers are pale yellowish-greenish, cylindrical and fleshy, translucent and flexible, 2.5 to 5 centimeters long, 0.3 to 0.6 centimeter in diameter, tapering at either extremity. Leaves are tufted, numerous, ensiform, 45 to 70 centimeters long, and 0.3 to 0.8 centimeters wide. Inflorescence is solitary, 20 to 33 centimeters long. Flowers are small and odorless, white or purplish.

Etymology

The genus is derived from Greek mythology—the woodland nymph, Liriope, mother of Narcissus by the river god Cephissus, according to Ovid's metamorphoses.

Describe

Liriope Graminifolia is a perennial herb. Roots thin or slightly thick, much branched, with underground stems; sometimes with spindle-shaped small tuberous roots; rhizomes short or slightly long, with underground stems. Leaves clustered, leaves 20-50 cm long, 2-3 mm wide, apex obtuse or acuminate, with 5 veins, nearly entire, but apex edge with fine teeth, base often with residual dead leaves or sometimes torn into Fibrous. Scapes are usually slightly shorter than leaves, 20-48 cm long, in racemes, 6-15 cm long, with many flowers; flowers are usually 3-5 clustered in bract axils; bracts are ovate, with long tips at the apex , the bottom one is 5-6 mm long, phylloid; the pedicel is about 4 mm long, and the joint is near the top; perianth segments are narrowly oblong or obround, apex obtusely rounded, 3.5-4 mm long, white or pale Purple; filaments 1-1.5 mm long, flat and slightly wider; anthers nearly oblong, about 1 mm long; ovary subglobose; style about 2 mm long, slightly thicker, stigma as wide as style. Berry oval or nearly spherical, blue-black when ripe; 4-5mm in diameter, initially green, blue-black when ripe. The flowering period is June-August, and the fruiting period is September-November.

Distribution And Habitat

Distributed in the Philippines, Japan, Korea, China (Shandong, East China, North China, Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangdong, Taiwan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi), etc.

Liriope Graminifolia grows in ravines, thickets, shaded ravines, between rock crevices, valley understory or forest edge grass

Anti-tumor

Steroidal Saponins / Anti-Tumor Activities: Study isolated two new steroidal saponins - lirigramosides A and B along with four known compounds. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against Hela and SMMC-7721 cells. (see constituents above)

Anti-Tumor: Study of isolated eight compounds. Compound 1 showed strong anti-tumor activity against human cervical carcinoma; compound 7, moderate anti-tumor activity against human cervical carcinoma and human hepatocellular carcinoma; compound 5, antiproliferative activity against human cervical carcinoma.

Novel C27-Steroidal Glycoside / Cytotoxicity / Underground Organs : Study isolated an unusual novel C27-steroidal glycoside sulfate from the underground parts, together with three known compounds. Compound 1 (HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR as (25S)-ruscogenin 1-sulfate-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside) has cytotoxic activities against K562 and HL60 cells. (see constituents above)

Anti-Tumor: Study of Liriope graminifolia yielded various bioactive compounds. Compound 1 showed strong anti-tumor activities against human cervical carcinoma; compound 7 had moderate anti-tumor activities against human cervical carcinoma (Hela) and human hepatocellular carcinoma (SMMC-7721; compound 5 had antiproliferative activity to human cervical carcinoma (Hela). (see constituents above)
